Marcasite nodule, measuring 40 x 37 x 35mm

Marcasite
This small rock was found on a beach and was initially believed to be a meteorite. It was very heavy and felt like a lump of iron. It was later identified by the NHM as a Marcasite nodule. Marcasite is a mineral often referred to as "White Pyrite", with the element symbol FeS2. It usually occurs as a mineral deposit in other rocks, but sometimes it can be found as a large lump, or nodule, around chalk cliffs, such as Dover. If broken open this nodule would reveal radiating orthorhombic (needle-like) silvery crystals of marcasite inside.

Echinoid fossil

Echinoid fossil
This small fossil, measuring 25 x 35 x 50mm, has been identified by the NHM as the worn and broken remains of an Echinoid fossil (ancient Sea Urchin). It probably dates to around 450 million years ago.
